The Spirits

Cognac and Armagnac, two of the world’s most renowned spirits appellations, each have their own unique identity and qualities. Armagnac, the oldest brandy in France, boasts a rich history and is revered for its unique character. On the other hand, its younger brother, Cognac, is more widely popular around the world.

Despite being separated by around 300 kilometers, these two grape-based spirits share some similarities. However, there are distinct differences that set them apart. In Cognac, the primary grape variety used is Ugni-Blanc, which yields fine and high-quality brandies. This grape variety is also used in Armagnac, although in smaller quantities (55%). The distillation process in Cognac involves two rounds of distillation on the Charente still.

In contrast, Armagnac has a wider range of grape varieties used in its production. The Folle Blanche grape produces fine and floral spirits, while Colombard imparts fruity and spicy notes that are appreciated in blends. The Baco grape, a hybrid of the wild white and American Noah, produces round spirits with ripe fruit flavors. The majority of Armagnac is obtained using the continuous Armagnac still, which gives it a unique character.

Both Cognac and Armagnac have rightfully earned their place as some of the most prestigious spirits in the world. At Elysee Export, we are proud to offer a selection of these exceptional brandies to our customers.
